The following article talks about what oversteer and understeer mean. Feel free to add your questions and comments below. You've probably heard the terms before, but what do they really mean? Oversteer Oversteer is the car's rear-end tendency to move to the exterior of the curve due to factors such as weigh distribution, brake BIAS, aerodynamics, differential, suspension, etc. Here's a visual representation of oversteer:

Parameters that reduce oversteer
Component
Adjustment
Brake BIAS - Move towards the front. Wings - Increase rear wing angle. - Decrease front wing angle. Weight Distribution - Move towards the front. Differential Coast - Increase, tighten. Anti-roll Bar - Decrease, loosen the rear anti-roll bar. - Increase, tighten the front anti-roll bar. Springs - Decrease, loosen the rear springs. - Increase, tighten the front springs. Understeer Understeeris the car's front-end tendency to move to the exterior of the curve due to factors such as weigh distribution, brake BIAS, aerodynamics, differential, suspension, etc. Here's a visual representation of understeer:

Parameters that reduce understeer

Brake BIAS - Move towards the rear. Wings - Increase front wing angle. - Decrease rear wing angle. Weight Distribution - Move towards the rear. Differential Coast - Decrease, loosen. Anti-roll Bar - Decrease, loosen the front anti-roll bar. - Increase, tighten the rear anti-roll bar. Springs - Decrease, loosen the front springs. - Increase, tighten the rear springs. Front-wheel drive (FWD) cars Front-wheel drive cars have a natural tendency to understeer due to the fact that the engine's weight is located towards the front of the car. The setup of a FWD car should cause oversteer in order to reduce the effects of the engine being on the front. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) cars Rear-wheel drive cars have a natural tendency to oversteer due to the fact that the engine is at the rear or because the drive forces and directed towards the rear axis. The setup of a RWD car should cause understeer in order to reduce such effects.
